Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte forced 20 turnovers from the Knights this evening en route to an 84-70 Conference Carolinas win in men's basketball action. The Royals improve to 2-0 in the league and 7-5 on the year, while St. Andrews University falls to 0-2 in conference play and 5-9 on the season.
Senior captains
Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond )and
Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside) led the Royals' offense tonight scoring 18 and 17 points, respectively. Eads also dished out four assists and collected three rebounds with two steals, while Bailey added four rebounds, three assists and two steals to his stat line.
Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) contributed 13 points, while
Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) turned in 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Royals shot 88.24-percent from the foul line paced by an 11-of-12 effort from Eads. Two other Royals were perfect from the charity stripe.
Ryan Streater led the Knights with a game-high 21 points with nearly half of his scoring coming from the foul line where he went 10-12. Aaron Christian finished the game with 14 points, while Antonio Moffitt and Chris Sumski each totaled 12 points.
The Knights held their only lead of the game after knocking down the first shot in regulation. Queens soon took over putting together a string of runs to go up by as much as 14 with 8:53 to play in the first. Christian of the Knights scored a bucket to give St. Andrews 12 points, but the Royals answered with a 10-0 run giving the game a 34-12 score. The Royals built their lead out to 23 before the Knights had a final push at the close of the half knocking down a pair of threes to cut Queens' lead to eight at the break, 41-33.
In the second half, the Knights got within three points of Queens with 12:30 to play after Sumski sunk a three-pointer. However, the Royals' defense got after it forcing a turnover from the Knights. Nichols was able to ignite a short run after collecting a steal and scoring a basket on a fast-break. His shot was followed by a three-pointer from Bailey which put the Royals up by eight, 60-52. Queens then went on a 14-5 run creating even more breathing room en route to their win.
The Royals are back in action on Saturday at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., at 7:30 p.m.
