Women’s soccer blanks Coker

Queens defeated the Cobras 5-0.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Women's Soccer Team defeated the Coker College Cobras this evening by a score of 5-0 improving their record to 2-1 in the league and 2-6 overall. Coker falls to 1-2 in Conference Carolinas action and 1-8 on the season.

The Royals outshot the visiting Cobras 24-to-2 in tonight's contest and won six corner kicks to Coker's two.

Queens was on the attack early finding a goal in the third minute of action. Samantha Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) fed a streaking Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa., Penn Manor) the ball in the box that Coker's keeper bobbled. Sload took advantage of the opportunity slipping the ball into the net.

About five minutes later, Kathryn Sylvester (Cary, N.C., Apex ) booted a ball from the top of the 18 that found the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. A few minutes later it appeared there was déjà vu as Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ) fired a ball from the same spot getting the same result.

Things died down for a bit until the 44th minute when Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) passed the ball into the net for the 4-0 lead at the half. Sarah Johnson (West Columbia, S.C., Brookland-Cayce) served Wright a grounder from the right side that snuck past the Cobras' defense meeting Wright's foot just in time for the goal.

In the second half Striano made a skillful play to the net beating her defender outright for a wide open shot that soared over Coker's keeper for the fifth goal of the night for Queens.

All Royals saw time on the field in this evening's win. Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury) saw all 90 minutes in goal earning the win and notching one save, while Haley Gibson of the Cobras took the loss with five stops.

Queens will return to action on Wednesday, September 28th at Barton. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m.
