Late shots come up short for Royals against Limestone

Queens fell 2-1 to the Saints.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two shots to tie the game were stopped by Limestone College's keeper in the final minutes of this evening's women's soccer game as the Royals fell 2-1 to the visiting Saints. Queens University of Charlotte falls to 1-1 in Conference Carolinas action and 1-6 on the season, while Limestone improves to 2-1 in the league and 4-3 overall.

The Saints were able to notch a point on the board first after a Queens attempt early in the game was blocked by a Limestone defender. Vanessa Jarret was able to pull Queens' keeper, Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury), out of position before sneaking the ball past her into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Limestone was able to hold on to the 1-0 lead heading into the break as the tempo of the game changed with only one shot taking place in the final 30 minutes of the half.

Reminiscent of the first period, neither team took an attempt in the first 19 minutes of play coming out of the break

Limestone found a break in the 64th minute when their keeper, Kristin Alderin-Fleagle punted a ball into play that Tillman Fennell popped behind the Royals defense. Ashley Alderin-Fleagle beat Seretis to the ball sending it into the net as both players crashed into one another.

Queens responded in the 72nd minute on a header off of a corner kick. Amanda Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ) served a beautiful ball into play that Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ) met just in front of the goal for the point cutting the lead to 2-1 with just over 18 minutes left in regulation.

From there, the Royals worked to tie the game as shots by Brooke Foil (Knightdale, N.C., Knightdale) and Samantha Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) were saved by Limestone's keeper. Vawter would take her chance at two more attempts before the final horn sounded.

The game was evenly matched as each team took eight shots. The Royals won the battle for corners taking six to Limestone's three.

Queens will be looking to turn things around on Saturday back at the Queens Sports Complex in a game set to kick-off at 7:30 p.m., against Coker College.
