Women’s tennis unable to upset Erskine

Morgan Roberts and Christina Rustscheff named All-Tournament

SUMTER, S.C.- The Queens women's tennis team couldn't overcome No. 47 and top seed in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Erskine in the championship match and fell 5-3. For their efforts in the tournament Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) and Christina Rustscheff (Toronto, Canada, Bayview Glen) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Queens will now wait to see if they will get a bid to the NCAA Championship tournament.

Queens started the match with two wins in doubles play. In the top doubles pairing Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson) and Rustscheff defeated Tessa Rheault and Britton Bignon 8-6. Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) and Hewit Hawn (Naples, Fla., Community School of Naples) won a close one over Nikki Miller and Abbey O'Reilly 9-8 (8-6). This is the first time the Royals have taken a doubles match, let alone two, from Erskine this season.

With a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, it was a dogfight to see who would come away with the title.

At the No. 1 flight, Elena Mileva (Sofia, Bulgaria, First Private English Language School) and Rheault went to three sets. Rheault won the first and third sets with Mileva taking the second. Roberts and O'Reilly also went to three sets, this time with Queens coming out on top.

The Flying Fleet won the remaining flights with the second not having a result. The win for Erskine gives them seven straight tournament championships.
