HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The softball team continues to do what it does best; perform well in the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament. In the second game of the day, Queens beat Pfeiffer 2-1 and advances to the semifinal round where they will face Erskine at 3pm on Saturday.
It was a pitcher's duel through the third when Queens finally broke through. All-Conference Second Team member
Emily Poulton (Temecula, Calif., Great Oak) led off with a double. A single by
Maria Goode (Charlotte, N.C., Providence) and a walk for
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) loaded the bases. The next two batters were retired with a pop up and a strike out, but
Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) hit a single to drive in two runs.
Pfeiffer scattered three hits in each of the next three innings while the Royals didn't have any.
In the top of the seventh Pfeiffer loaded the bases using a single, a fielder's choice and a walk. With two outs burned, Melanie Conklin singled to drive in a single run and keep the bases loaded. A pop-up ended the inning and the game.
The Royals offense collected three hits from three different players. Pitcher Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) sat six down with strike outs and gave up six hits.
Conklin was 3-3 for Pfeiffer. She also started the in the circle and went five innings. Conklin struck out five and walked seven.
In the last meeting of Queens and Erskine the two teams split the twinbill with Queens winning 1-0 and falling 8-3 in eight innings.
