Single run gives Queens softball the 1-0 win

The Royals travel to Mount Olive and Barton this weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte team used a single run in the fifth inning to defeat North Greenville at Park Road Park on a windy, dusty night. The Royals improve to 13-14 and the Crusaders fall to 8-15.

Both teams had to battle frequent dust clouds, some so thick that the infield disappeared from view.

It was scoreless through four when Queens broke the knotted zeros. Pitcher Brandy Jester (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) started the inning with a single. With two outs on the board, North Greenville's Taylor Roof walked Brooke Spradlin (Charleston, S.C., Wando) and Maria Goode (Charlotte, N.C., Providence) notched a single to load the bases. With Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) at the plate, Queens took advantage of a passed ball to score the sole run of the game. Dodge flied out to end the inning leave two on base.

Jester gave up just one hit in the last two innings and struck out three to end the game. On the night she was allowed six hits and struck out eight. Jester also had one of the two hits for Queens.

Roof takes the loss while striking out nine and allowing two hits.

Kansas Wofford led the Crusaders with two hits.

Queens returns to conference action this weekend as they play Mount Olive and Barton on Friday and Saturday. The Royals will return home to Park Road Park for one last series on March 30 against Limestone. Queens' three seniors, Goode, Jester and Alisha Waldrop (McDonough, Ga., Luella ), will be honored before the game.
