LAURINBURG, N.C. – After a week off, the Royals hit the hardwood this afternoon on the road against St. Andrews Presbyterian College. Queens University of Charlotte picked up its ninth win of the season defeating the Knights convincingly by 34 points, 83-49.
The Royals improve to 8-4 in conference play and 9-9 overall. St. Andrews is still in search of its first win of the season sitting at the bottom of the conference with a 0-13 record (0-17 overall).
Leading the Royals was Conference Carolinas Player of the Week Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University ) with her 12th double-double of the season. Hudley scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Four other Royals reached double figure scoring as well. Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) scored 13 points while Jessica Lewis (Hampton, Va., Bethel) netted 11. Sarah Myatt (Burlington, N.C., Alamance) and Erin Goldner (Matthews, N.C., Piedmont) each scored 10 apiece.
After the Knights scored three points, the Royals reeled off 11 straight expanding their lead to 13 with 12:09 on the clock. St. Andrews cut the Royals lead down to nine before Queens scored six unanswered points on their way to an 18 point lead, the largest of the half. Queens ended the first half leading 41-25.
Queens' offense was on fire during the second stanza shooting 57.6-percent from the floor. A four minute scoring drought for the Knights allowed Queens to build a 32 point lead with 9:17 to go in the game. The Royals also took advantage of St. Andrews' shaky ball-handling scoring 14 second half points off of turnovers. With 31 seconds left on the clock, Jazmine Edmonds (Manassas, Va., CD Hylton) kissed a lay-up off the glass giving Queens its largest lead of the game, 34.
The Royals held St. Andrews to 24.6-percent shooting in this afternoon's game. Queens also saw 43 points scored from the bench displaying the team's depth.
The Knights were led by Natia Gasque who scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 19 minutes of play. Meghan Lee was also productive scoring nine points to go along with her nine rebounds.
The Royals will return home on Monday, February 7th to take on Lees-McRae College in The Oven at 5:30 p.m.
