Royals’ final game at Ovens spoiled by Senators

The Royals lost 90-80 to Davis & Elkins.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In what was the final athletic event to be played at Ovens Athletic Center, the Royals fell 90-80 the Senators of Davis & Elkins College. The loss puts the Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team at 4-4, while the Senators' record improves to 2-4 on the season.

The Royals were led by Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) who recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) was one rebound away from a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) added 15 points, and five assists, while Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside) chipped in with 12 points.

Ian Pinckney led all scorers with 36 points after tallying 26 by the break. He also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Malik Tinsley notched 23 points and seven rebounds, while PJ Turner added 10 points and nine assists.

The Royals began the game with the hot hand building a nine point lead after an alley-oop from Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) to Bailey put the score at 15-6. However the Senators would go on a 15-to-6 run to tie the game at 21-21 with 6:33 to play. Eads responded with a jumper which was followed with a lay-up from Nichols putting Queens back up by four. The Senators' Pinckney then took over scoring 14 of their last 18 points of the half. Queens would trail 39-29 at the break.

Both teams shot around 40-percent from the floor in the first half. The Royals had a tough time in three-point land only knocking down 1-of-10 attempts.

In the second half, the Senators built their lead out to 17 points, 58-41, at the 13:37 mark. Queens made their final push in the in the final five minutes of the game. Evans scored a bucket to cut the gap to 12. His shot was followed by a lay-up from Eads making it a 10 point game, 73-63. After a Senator basket, Blackburn drained a three-pointer bringing Davis & Elkins to within single digits. Evans cut the Senators' lead to seven on three occasions in the final two minutes, but that was as close as the Royals would get as Davis & Elkins held off Queens.

At the half, a groundbreaking ceremony took place honoring the Levines for making the Levine Center for Wellness and Recreation possible with their generous donation.

The Royals will break for exams before traveling to Florida to play in the Courtyard by Marriott Classic hosted by Lynn University on December 18-19.
