Women’s basketball ends skid with big win over Golden Bulls

The Royals upset Johnson C. Smith 62-57.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman guard Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) poured in a game-high 23 points this evening as the Royals (2-6) defeated Johnson C. Smith (6-2) 62-57. The win spoiled Head Coach Vanessa Taylor's, of the Golden Bulls, 200th victory as Queens University of Charlotte handed Johnson C. Smith, a team receiving national votes, their second loss of the season.

Sweet went 6-of-13 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line on the night, while also grabbing five rebounds. Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) and Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) added 12 points for the Royals. Pettaway led under the glass with seven rebounds, while Myatt collected six.

LaQwesha Gamble recorded the only double-double of the game with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Terrica Jones and Shavonda Price scored 10 points apiece. Racquel Davis led all in the game with 16 rebounds, while Price added nine.

At the 5:38 mark, Pettaway was fouled and sent to the line where she knocked down two shots to give the Royals the lead for good. Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) then knocked down three-points the old-fashioned way, which Sweet followed with two more free-throws giving the Royals even more breathing room with 2:26 left in regulation. The seven point lead was cut to three after a steal and a bucket by Johnson C. Smith's Jones, but the Royals' Sweet knocked down two more from the charity stripe stretching the lead back out to five for the final score of 62-57.

In the first half of play, the Golden Bulls out-rebounded the Royals 36-to-16 scoring 13 second chance points en route to building a 12 point lead with 2:10 on the clock. Sweet scored the final seven points of the period for Queens as they headed into the locker room trailing the Golden Bulls 36-27.

The Royals will host Barber Scotia this Wednesday, December 7 at 6 p.m. The game will be the final women's basketball game played at Ovens Athletic Center.
