Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Queens University of Charlotte (1-5) was beaten 66-46 this afternoon by Eckerd College (3-1) in a women's basketball game where the Royals struggled from the floor delivering a 22-percent shooting percentage.
Though heavily targeted, Queens' leading scorer,
Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central), finished with a game-high 17 points. Playing a mixture of man-to-man and zone defense, the Tritons swarmed the talented 6-0 forward, contesting every shot and forcing her to fade away from the basket. She also collected four rebounds.
Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) contributed eight points on the afternoon with five rebounds.
Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) finished with nine rebounds.
Scoring was equally distributed for the Tritons, paced by 11 from Kati Rausberg. Linsey Niles added nine while Taylor Young and Amy Buccilla each poured in eight.
The Royals took a game-high 27 shots from the foul line sinking 20, while Eckerd held a 46-41 edge in the rebounding department.
The Tritons opened the game with a 10-2 run spanning the first four minutes and the lead swelled to 10 at the 12:04 mark after a three-point bucket by Rausberg.
With the score sitting at 20-10, the Royals went scoreless for a four-minute stretch as the Tritons pushed their lead to 15.
The Royals ended up scoring 12 of their 24 first-half points from the charity stripe, the rest on six field goals. Eckerd's Young hit a pair of free throws for their largest lead of the first half at 18 with five minutes to go before the break.
The Tritons controlled the game throughout the second half increasing their lead to as much as 27 en route to defeating the Royals.
The Royals will return to the court on Saturday, December 3 against Livingstone College at Ovens Athletics Center. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
