Queens picks first win of the season up over UNC-Pembroke

The Royals won 56-55.

Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte squeezed a one point victory out over UNC-Pembroke for their first win of the season in women's basketball action giving the Royals a 1-2 record. The Braves are 1-1 after the 56-55 loss this afternoon.  

Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) led the way for Queens in the opening minutes recording six points in the Royals' 9-0 run. A lay-up by UNC-Pembroke's Jasmine Hairston put the Braves on the board, but the Royals continued knocking down baskets building a 13 point lead on two occasions. Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) kissed a runner off the glass to put the Royals up 25-12 with 7:22 on the clock.  DeDe Cotton responded with a three to cut Queens' lead to 10 and change the momentum for the final minutes of the half as UNC-Pembroke made an 11-5 run to close the half.

The Royals held a six point advantage at halftime after shooting 46-percent from the floor. Both teams turned the ball over eight times, but Queens capitalized scoring 14 points off of the Braves' mishaps.

UNC-Pembroke put together a 16-10 run in the final seven minutes of the second half bringing them to within one of the Royals. Anya Knower knocked down two free-throws with nine seconds on the clock to make the score 56-55. However, Queens would hold out for the win in the final ticks.

Pettaway finished the game with 18 points and five rebounds. Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sweet tallied 10 points.

Leading the Braves was Domonique Washington with 20 points and seven boards. Knower finished the game with 10 points.

Queens returns to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to face Lincoln Memorial at home.
