Men’s soccer falls in conference tournament quarterfinal match with No. 5 Coker

The Royals lost 3-0.

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Queens University of Charlotte bowed out of Conference Carolinas Tournament play falling 3-0 to the Cobras of Coker College, who are ranked fifth in the nation. With the loss, the Royals end their season at 6-10. The Cobras (16-2) advance to the semifinal round to host Limestone College on Friday.

The Royals were aggressive attacking the net in the opening 30-minutes of play taking six shots to Cokers two. However, the Cobras took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute thanks to a tip in scored by Atticus Lum. Tyler Staub assisted on the play.

The score remained 1-0 through halftime, until the 49th minute of play when Noah Lascell put Coker up 2-0 with a shot past a diving Simen Walmann (Nevlunghavn, Norway, Toppidrettsgymnaset). His goal was assisted by Niko Tirkkonen.

In the 63rd minute Staub earned a second assist with a cross into the box that Carlos Recinos put into the back of the net with a one-timer.

Queens held the advantage on shots 12-7, but Coker keeper James Sweeney was perfect in the net with six saves, earning his ninth shutout of the season and third in a row.

Walmann had three saves in the match and Queens also had the advantage on corner kicks, 4-1. Jeremy Chambers (Princeton, W.Va., Princeton Senior) and Felipe Netto (Salvador, Brazil, Colegio Candido Portinari) led the Royals in shots with three apiece.
