Royals cruise to victory over Erskine

Queens defeated the Flying Fleet 4-0.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Samantha Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) picked up five points in route to leading the Royals to a 4-0 victory over Conference Carolinas opponent Erskine College this evening at the Queens Sports Complex. Queens moves to fourth in the conference with a league record of 4-1-1 and an overall record of 4-6-1. The Flying Fleet are now 3-5 in conference play and 4-5 on the season.

Striano netted two goals and picked up an assist in the match leading all players in points. Also scoring for Queens was senior defender Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ) and sophomore midfielder Hope Hartman (Buies Creek, N.C., Homeschool). Keeper Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury) was awarded the shut-out after collecting one stop.

Erskine's Casey Craft was the only player to tally a shot on goal for the visiting team. Katie Lyle took the loss in goal after collecting five saves.

Vawter scored the first goal of the game on a play the Royals have scored on numerous times this season. After winning a corner kick, Amanda Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ) served a ball into play that Vawter headed into the back of the net for the early lead six minutes into the game. The score remained 1-0 until the break.

The Royals put three balls in the net in the second half beginning with one from Striano. Brooke Foil (Knightdale, N.C., Knightdale) beat the Fleet's defense pulling the goalie out of the net before slipping the ball to Striano who crept in behind Erskine's keeper for the goal.

She would follow her goal with another 10 minutes later. Wright sent a ball into play that Striano met in the box. Erskine's keeper stopped the first shot from Striano, but she stayed persistent collecting the rebound and taking another for her second goal of the night.

Striano notched her assist on the last goal of the game slipping a ball pass Erskine's defense up to a streaking Hartman who scored it in the 84th minute of play.

Queens has a day off before traveling to Banner Elk, N.C. to face Lees-McRae College on Saturday at 5 p.m.
