CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Felipe Netto (Salvador, Brazil, Colegio Candido Portinari) scored on a penalty kick in the 76
th minute giving the Royals their lone goal in the 3-1 loss to Erskine College this evening. The Flying Fleet improve to 3-2 in the league and 5-4-1 on the season, while Queens University of Charlotte drops its 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the Conference Carolinas men's soccer action.
Andrew Settlemire of the Flying Fleet scored his first of two goals in the fourth minute on a rebound, put-back. The Royals turned up the defensive pressure for the rest of the half as the score remained 1-0 at the break.
The Royals battled in the second half fighting to equalize the match. A bad break came in the 61
st minute when a foul by Queens in the box set Erskine up for a penalty kick. The Fleet's Jonathan Rutter netted the shot for a 2-0 lead.
Fifteen minutes later, Erskine would return the favor fouling in the box. Netto stepped up scoring the goal to bring Queens within one of the visitors with 15 minutes left in the game.
Erskine's Settlemire would score the Fleet's insurance goal in the 81
st minute. Cade Weatherly booted a ball over Queens' defense that keeper
Simen Walmann (Nevlunghavn, Norway, Toppidrettsgymnaset) charged out of the net to retrieve. However, Settlemire beat him to the punch, heading the ball over Walmann and into the net for the Fleet's third and final goal of the game.
For the game, Erskine outshot Queens 13-11 while Queens held an advantage on corner kicks at 5-2. Both teams were called for offsides four times.
Queens' two goalkeepers,
Giancarlo Aristondo (Charlotte, N.C., South Mecklenburg) and Walmann, recorded 4 saves, while Erskine's goalkeeper, Robert De La Vina, recorded three saves.
Queens returns to the field on Saturday in Banner Elk, N.C. to take on Lees-McRae College.
