Ferguson scores game-winning-goal in Royals victory

Justin Ferguson scored two goals in the win.

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Justin Ferguson (Denver, Colo., Cherry Creek) of the men's soccer team scored a penalty kick with 73:36 on the clock to secure the 3-2 win for Queens University of Charlotte this afternoon in Mt. Olive, N.C. The Royals defeated Mount Olive College improving their conference record to 3-1 (4-3 overall). The Trojans fall to 0-3 in Conference Carolinas (1-6-1 overall).

This afternoon's game opened up with zero goals in the first 30 minutes of play only to close the first half with three goals scored in the final 15 minutes.

Jeremy Chambers (Princeton, W.Va., Princeton Senior) assisted Ferguson in the first goal of the game in the 30th minute of play. Chambers dribbled through traffic in the box before serving Ferguson the ball, who then netted the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Gersi Cilingiri (Jacksonville, Fla., Wolfson) scored the second goal for the Royals with 43:41 on the clock. Chambers was behind the serve once again collecting his second assist for the day.

Mount Olive's Scott Mitchell broke up the Royals scoring run finding the back of the net in the final minute of the half. Tyler Vandevender was awarded the assist on the play.

The Trojans opened up the second half much like they closed the first with a goal in the 48th minute. Mt. Olive goalkeeper Shane Parman punted a ball that was then flicked by Matt Cargile to Daniel Grant-Hunter who booted the ball in to the net tying the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until Ferguson's game winner in the 73rd minute. After a corner kick, Ferguson was fouled in the box giving him a penalty kick. He fired the ball into the net securing the Royals victory.

Queens is back in action at the Queens Sports Complex when they play host to conference foe Belmont Abbey College at 7:30 p.m.
