CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Royals fell to Catawba College this evening in a non-conference match-up in double overtime, 2-1. The loss marks the third in a row for the Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team as they fall to 4-6 (3-3 CC). The Indians improve to 6-4-1 (0-3 SAC).
With the game tied up in the second OT, Corey Faughnan of Catawba found the back of the net on a header in the 107th minute of play. Valentin Nava caught sight of Faughnan from the right side serving him the ball for the golden goal.
The Royals led 1-0 at the half after scoring a goal at 29:05. After a foul, Justin Ferguson (Denver, Colo., Cherry Creek) booted a free kick into play finding Gersi Cilingiri (Jacksonville, Fla., Wolfson). Cilingiri headed the ball past Catawba's keeper for the lead.
Catawba tied the game up in the 59th minute with an unassisted goal by Carson Smith. Smith got behind the Royals' defense and went one-on-one with Queens' keeper Giancarlo Aristondo (Charlotte, N.C., South Mecklenburg) sneaking the ball past him into the net.
Rough play throughout the second half led to frustration amongst the players and a lot of missed scoring opportunities for both teams as tonight's game saw nine yellow cards and one red.
With the clock counting down and a tied game seeming inevitable, Faughnan scored the game winner to end the game.
The Royals won the battle for corner kicks with six to Catawba's five. The Indians outshot the Royals 20-17. 36 fouls were whistled in the game.
Aristondo finished the game with five saves, while Catawba keeper Evan Harvey tallied six.
The Royals will host Lees-McRae College Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. looking to end their three game skid.
