DUE WEST— The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team rebounded from a loss earlier in the week today with a win over Erskine College holding on to their number two spot in Conference Carolinas standings.
The Royals scored two second half goals to push past Erskine at Huggins Field winning 2-0. Erskine dropped to 2-7 and 2-3 in Conference Carolinas while Queens improved to 5-5 and 5-1 in league play.
Both teams had chances in the first 45 minutes but neither could take advantage as the game went to half at 0-0.
Queens broke through at 51:01 when Sarah Johnson (West Columbia, S.C., Brookland-Cayce) broke free on the right wing and hit a hard grounder past Erskine goalie Si'Ara Washington.
The Royals struck again 11 minutes later. Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa., Penn Manor) served a ball into the box off a corner kick which Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ) met. Vawter drilled the ball past Washington to give Queens the 2-0 advantage.
Queens fired off 18 shots on the day to Erskine's 12. Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) was awarded the shutout with four saves while Erskine's Washington made 11 saves.
The Royals have a week off until they play host to Lees-McRae College on October 9th at 5:00 p.m.
