Queens pulls away from St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Ashley McGuirt (Indian Trail, N.C., Providence Day) scored a game-high 19 points to lead visiting Queens University of Charlotte in a 78-44 Conference Carolinas women's basketball victory Wednesday evening in Harris Court.

The Royals (5-6 Overall; 4-2 Conf.) remain perfect in 2010 with their fourth straight win while the Lady Knights (1-8; 0-6) dropped their fifth straight trip to the hardwood.

Queens shot 46.7-percent (28-of-60) compared to just 28.8% (17-of-59) by St. Andrews. The Royals held a slim 43-40 rebounding edge while also protecting the ball better with nine less turnovers, 19-10.

The Royals hit three of their first four shots in the opening 90 seconds to take a quick 6-0 lead. The Knights kept the score close for the first 13 minutes with Queens holding only a one-possession lead, 22-19, with 6:40 left in the first before going on a 19-7 run to take control. Queens never trailed and held a 15-point advantage, 41-26, at halftime.

Queens pulled away after the intermission holding SAPC to just six made field goals in the final 20 minutes.

Knights' player Essence Chism (Garner, N.C.) had season-high marks of 13 rebounds and nine points to pace SAPC. Sophomore point guard Megan Lee (Chillicothe, Ohio) scored a team-high 14 points for the Lady Knights. Senior center Kayla Hay (Hanover, Ind.) filled up the box score with 10 rebounds, six points, and a game and career high five blocks. Sophomore shooting guard Brittany Roberts (Concord, N.C.) added six points for St. Andrews.

A trio of Royals scored in double figures including junior guard Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University )bucketing 15 and freshman guardDyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) swishing 12. McGuirt scored 15 of her 19 points on a game-high five 3-pointers.

All eight active players for Queens scored including nine points from senior guard Cecilia Tchangoue (St. Jean Le Blanc, France, Forsyth Country Day) and seven points apiece from senior forward Jacquia Winstead (Elm City, N.C., Beddingfield) and junior forward Jazmine Edmonds (Manassas, Va., CD Hylton).

Winstead posted team-high totals of eight boards, four blocks, and four steals for the Royals. Edmonds and Hudley both pulled down seven rebounds. Tchangoue dished out a game-high four assists.
 
The Royals host local conference rival Pfeiffer University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
