BOONE, N.C.- Junior Jessica Neville (Cold Spring, N.Y., Haldane) broke into the top ten in the final straight for 10th-place finish to lead the Royals at Appalachian State's Covered Bridge Open Friday afternoon in Boone, N.C. Queens finished in fourth in the six team field with 89-points in the hunt for a medal the entire race. Appalachian State was a mere twenty points ahead in 3rd with 69 with UNC-Chapel Hill in 2nd with 66. Florida State took the team title with 22-points while Lenior Rhyne was a distant 5th with 123-points and Virginia Wise was 6th with 183.
 
Neville, who posted a time of 19:01.0 for the 5,000-meter course, was followed closely by sophomore Holly Annas (Granite Falls, N.C., South Caldwell), who was 12th in 19:04.0. Freshman Maraya Slatter (Benson, N.C., West Johnston) debuted for Queens in 16th at 19:14.8 as did freshmen Melanie Bergen (Parker, Col., Chaparral), 30th in 20:43.9, and Katie Snow, 32nd in 21:04.7.
 
“We certainly are not satisfied and we do have some big goals ahead,” said coach Scott Simmons, “but even at this early point, I can say that this is the best team performance ever by Queens. We still have a lot of work to do and a lot to accomplish though.”
 
The Royals, who competed without four of its squad including NCAA national provisional qualifier Meagan Nedlo, will be off next weekend and will compete back in Boone Friday September 18th at Appalachian State.
