Women’s Soccer falls in heartbreaking game

Sload scores for Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Despite controlling much of the game,  Queens women's soccer team fell to Conference Carolinas foe Limestone College by a score of 2-1 in a rainy Saturday afternoon contest.

The Royals (2-8-1/0-2-1) dominated offensively outshooting the Saints (1-7-0/0-2-0) 24-5. Freshman Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa., Penn Manor) led all shooters with five shots while sophomore Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ) and junior Rose Balderson (Trappe, Md., Saints Peter and Paul ) each tallied four.

Queens opened the scoring up in the 12th minute of play when Sload hit a second chance ball from a corner kick.

Limestone scored the tying goal minutes before the half in the same fashion. A corner kick by Diane Boyce slipped past the heads of the Queens team and was finished by Alexis Brothers.

In the second half the Royals rarely let Limestone cross midfield, holding possession for a majority of the 45 minute half. The home offense registered 12 shots to just three by the visitors.

Senior goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) did not have to make saves for Queens, but her smart playing throughout the game kept the team going. On more than one occasion she came off the line to pressure Limestone's forwards and end plays before they developed.

Kornacki gave up the second goal of the game in a one-v-one play when Vanessa Jarret had the ball on the left side of the goal tucked the shot under the keeper.

Queens hit the crossbar and posts too many times to count during the game. In the last 20 minutes of play the Royals took five of their 12 shots.

Limestone's Brittany Clark made nine saves in the contest.

Today's game was the start of a five-game home stretch featuring three conference opponents and two nonconference teams. The stretch continues on Wednesday, Sept. 30 as the Royals host Coker College at 7:30pm
