CHARLOTTE, N.C.- – Queens University of Charlotte's women's tennis team opened the spring season up against two Conference Carolinas opponents this past weekend. The Royals traveled to Anderson University on Friday, February 13, and lost a close one, 5-4. On Sunday the Royal hosted Mount Olive College in the first home event of the season. The visiting Trojans defeated Queens 7-2.
Against Anderson(1-0/1-0 CC), Queens' (0-2/0-2 CC) singles players picked up wins in the first and second position. Elena Mileva (Sofia, Bulgaria, First Private English Language School) defeated Mercela Gallegos by sound set of 6-3, 6-2. In No. 2 Kaitlyn Blakey (Keller, Tex., Keller) came from on set down to rally against Julie Halbert and won 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Mileva and Blakey paired up for the top doubles team and picked up their first doubles win of the season. The two defeated Anderson's top two singles player 8-6.
Royals Katherine Winship (Charlotte, N.C., Dominion Christian ) and Hewitt Hawn (Naples, Fla., Community School of Naples) played in the no. 2 spot and defeated Milena Goncalves and Lisa Gorman 9-8 (4).
After a day away from the courts, Queens welcomed Mount Olive College.
It looked like Mileva's unbeaten streak in No. 1 singles was slipping away after the first set when she lost 1-6, but she rebounded two win the next two 6-1 for the win over Jessica Souzu.
Blakey and Mileva again sat in the No. 1 doubles spot for Queens and again picked up the “w”. The two Royals defeated Souzo and Carol Aro 9-7.
Other than their opening loss in the fall, Mileva and Blakey have gone undefeated thus far. They hold a record of 5-1 in the first doubles spot.
