CHARLOTTE, N.C. (October 4, 2009) – The Royals fought hard against the Columbus State University Cougars on Sunday afternoon in a battle full of adrenaline. The Cougars came in to the game ranked fifth in the nation with a 4-0 record in the Peach Belt Conference. They improved to 9-1-2 overall as Queens University of Charlotte fell to 3-9-1 in the 3-0 contest.
This is the third time the Royals have met up with the Cougars since head coach Katie Talbert has taken over the program, the first time being in the NCAA tournament in 2007, and their improvement in play against Columbus State is evident each year.
The Royals got a few unlucky touches on the offensive end that allowed the Cougars goalie to get stops before Queens could shoot the ball throughout the game. That did not cause them to lose their focus on the defensive end as they got numerous blocks and a few team saves to stop the Cougars arsenal of shots. The Royals matched the aggressiveness of the Cougars which helped them stay in reach throughout the game.
Gina Goforth scored the first goal for the visiting Cougars at the 11th minute of play with a one timer in the box. The cross came from Kayla Brown on the right side. K.C. MacEachern found the back of the net around the 18th minute of play in the same fashion with Stephanie Parrish serving her the ball. Columbus State scored their final goal as Laurel McKenzie bodied the ball in off of a corner kick from her sister Jordan McKenzie. Columbus State took 25 total shots in the contest, 14 SOGs.
Queens won their only corner kick of the game after Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside)broke away from the defense down to the offensive end of the field. She was chased down by three Cougars players who stopped her from taking a shot around the 82nd minute of play. Columbus State had ten corner kicks in the game.
Royals goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )had six saves before being relieved by freshman Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) who had three stops.
Queens is back in action on October 10 as they host Mount Olive College at 2:00 p.m.
