CHARLOTTE, N.C.- After being held scoreless for the first 45 minutes of play Queens notched three goals in the second 45 to win 3-0 over Converse Wednesday evening at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park in Conference Carolinas action.
Queens (9-10-1/7-3-1 CC) poured on the pressure in the first half but Converse (3-16/1-9 CC) thwarted the Royals advances. Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) registered three shots of the Royals seven in the half. Queens also had a season-high first half amount of corner kicks, five.
Amanda Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) broke the scoring draught when she took a shot and Converse keeper Michelle Wilson did not cleanly save the ball allowing Wright to carry the ball into the goal. The goal came just under three minutes into the second half.
A foul on Kariel Parian (Auburn, N.H., Manchester Memorial )10 yards into the Converse half set up the second goal for Queens. Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman)stepped up to take the set piece, something she had been doing all game, putting a ball to the far side of the field. Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's) found the ball with her head and finished for her fourth goal of the season in the 87th minute of play.
Kelsey Howard (Marietta, Ga., Dominion Christian) collected a ball at midfield and dribbled towards the Valkyrie goal in a breakaway. The Converse defense caught up with her, she cut the ball back and ripped a shot from the top of the 18. The ball hit the near post and bounced in for the third goal of the evening just less than two minutes later.
Converse did step the offense up in the second half registering three shots and two corner kicks. Queens tallied 10 shots and two corners in the half. Overall, the Royals outshot the visitors 17-3.
The game closes the regular season for Queens. The Royals are currently in third amongst conference competition and look to host the first round of the tournament next week, but they will have to wait until Saturday to find out. The two teams tied for fourth place, Lees-McRae and Anderson, both have conference games on Saturday and a win from both schools would knock Queens out of the hosting spot.
