Royals top Bears to win 2-1

Queens defeated Lenoir-Rhyne in nonconference action.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (October 13, 2009) – The Royals hosted the Lenoir-Rhyne University Bears this evening in some nonconference women's soccer action at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park. Queens University of Charlotte defeated the Bears 2-1 to improve their overall record to 5-9-1. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 11-4 overall with the loss.

Elizabeth Hawes put the first points of the night on the board for the Bears when she snuck a one timer past the Queens keeper Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) in the 15th minute of play. Hawes shot the ball after a deflected pass landed it right in front of her. The goal was the only one of the night for the visiting team.

The Royals soon answered back tying the game up in the 18th minute when Amanda Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside )floated a ball over the Lenoir-Rhyne keeper after a pass from Kathryn Sylvester (Cary, N.C., Apex ) put her in a fast break position. Neither team could connect on another shot for the remainder of the first half as they left the field tied at 1-1.

Both teams came out in the second half playing aggressive. The first shot of the half came  from Kelsey Howard (Marietta, Ga., Dominion Christian) from the right side of the field. Her ball slipped past the Lenoir-Rhyne keeper before she could get her hands on it. Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's ), of the Royals, crept in behind her and fired the ball into the back of the net for the game winning goal at 52:47. Howard was awarded the assist on the play.

Queens proved to be more accurate and careful in their shot selection as they were outshot by the Bears 13-5 and still came out with the win. Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa., Penn Manor) led the Royals in shots with two. Kornacki finished the first half with one save while Hirschy recorded two in the second.

Catherine Hauck and Laura Linehan led the Bears in shots with four a piece while Katelyn Burwell tallied two saves.

The Royals will look to continue their winning streak against Lees-McRae College on October 15th at 6:00 p.m., in Banner Elk, N.C.
