Johnson’s PK lifts Queens past Mt. Olive in OT

The Royals defeated the Trojans 1-0.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (October 10, 2009)Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood ) shot the ball in to the left corner of the net for the win against Mount Olive College this afternoon. Queens University of Charlotte's 1-0 win improves their overall record to 4-9-1 and their conference record to 3-2-1. The Trojans fall to 5-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play.

The Royals and Trojans have gone into overtime a few times in recent years.  Neither team could find the back of the net to finish plays in the first or second halves of the game.

Queens came out ready to score as Amanda Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ) fed a ball into play for her teammates to shoot.  The Trojans keeper made a stop to prevent the point in the first minute of play. The Royals continued their pursuit firing three more shots at Mt. Olive that went wide or were blocked. Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) left the cage to make a few stops as well in the first half of play.

The second half of play was much like the first. The Royals made a change in the goal keeper position entering freshman Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) into the lineup. Queens and Mount Olive took six shots in the half. The Royals had a few corner kicks which resulted in wide shots. Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) took a hard hit in the box during a corner forcing her to leave the field.

Wright returned in the overtime period for the Royals. She was taken down by Lauren Condon of the Trojans inside the box forcing a penalty kick for the Royals. Senior Katherine Johnson stepped up to the plate and fired the ball in to the back of the net for the win at the 95th minute of play.

Johnson led Queens with four shots while Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's ), Kelsey Howard (Marietta, Ga., Dominion Christian), and Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa., Penn Manor) each had two. Kornacki and Hirschy ended the game with two saves a piece.

Rebecca Hecke led the Trojans with four shots and Cara Paxson had three. Goal keeper Lyndsey McIntyre had five saves.

The Royals are back on the field Tuesday night in non-conference action against Lenoir-Rhyne University at 6:00 p.m.
