Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 13 UNCP 4-0

Royals open Conference Carolinas play on Saturday at Coker

It was yet another cold and wet game at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl park tonight, Thursday, for the Royals women's soccer team. In the last non-conference game before opening a four-game Conference Carolinas stretch, the Royals fell 4-0 to undefeated No. 13 UNC-Pembroke. Queens drops to 0-4-1 on the season and UNCP improves to 4-0.

The Royals held off UNCP for 14 minute until Hanna Pirinen was able to sneak a backdoor shot past goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ). Fay Corbett made the crossing pass for the assist.

The Braves struck again a little over three minutes later when Melanie Cobb took a shot, it rebounded and Nisa Akins was able to finish the second chance ball.

The Royals gave up one more goal in the first off of a second chance ball. Britney Joiner finished her own Kornacki deflected ball to tally the third goal.

In the half, UNCP tallied 15 shots and Queen was unable to notch one. Kornacki made four saves.

In the second half Queens regrouped and pressured the Braves.

The Royals relied on 24 different players, including 11 freshmen, to create opportunities. Queen earned two corner kicks, but they were unable to convert on either.

UNCP added notched on more goal in the 63 minute by Corbett.

Kari Byzewski (Virginia Beach, Va., Salem ) took the only shot of the half for Queens. Michelle Landry (Atlanta, Ga., Druid Hills )guarded the net in the second half and made three saves. The Queens defense tightened up and cut the 15 shots from the first half down to just six in the second.

The Royals start a four-game Conference Carolinas stretch on Saturday against the Coker Cobras in Hartsville, S.C. The following week they host St. Andrews on Sept. 15 and Anderson on Sept. 20 followed by a road trip to Limestone on Sept. 27.
