In the season opening men's soccer game the Queens University of Charlotte Royals found themselves on the wrong side of the score with Tusculum College Thursday, August 28, at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park. The Royals fell 1-0 to the visiting Pioneers. Tusculum improves to 1-0 while Queens starts the season 0-1.
The lone goal of the game came in the 28th minute of play when Scott Lucky crossed a ball and Corey McPherson was able to get a head on it and sneak it past Royals goalie Jake O'Donnell (Prince George, Va., Prince George ).
The play remained even throughout the rest of the half. Tusculum held a one-shot advantage, 3-2, during the first 45 minutes.
In the second 45, pressure was applied by both teams all over the field without either being able to hold control for a long amount of time.
O'Donnell came big for the Royal with a little under five minutes left to play when he shut down Pioneer Bruno Conciecao in a one-versus-one situation.
By the end of regulation Queens trailed the Pioneers 8-5 in shots and both goaltenders, O'Donnell and Lance Moore recorded four saves.
Kevin O'Donnell (Prince George, Va., Prince George ) led the Royals with two shots. Conciecao, Anteneh Lemma and Lucas Paulini each had two shots for Tusculum.
Queens travels to Florence, S.C., on September 5, for a 4:00pm game with Francis Marion University.
