DUE WEST, S.C.- Forwards Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University ) and Jacquia Winstead (Elm City, N.C., Beddingfield) each earned double-doubles in tonight's Conference Carolinas loss against Erskine College. The Royals fell 81-78 and drop to 1-1 in league play and 2-4 overall. The Flying Fleet improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
Hudley led all scorers with 22 and also pulled 14 rebounds while Winstead put up 21 points of her own and gathered 18 rebounds. Allison Williams (Rougemont, N.C., Northern Durham) and Erin Goldner (Matthews, N.C., Piedmont) also had strong performances for the Royals contributing 10 points each.
The Royals went into halftime with a 36-44. Queens came out of the half-time break determined to put Erskine away as they quickly extended their lead to 13 (53-40). The Fleet chiseled away at the Royals' lead. Erskine picked up the pace and began aggressively going to the basket and drawing fouls. The Fleet outscored the Royals 16-1 from the charity stripe in the second half. Erskine also out-scored Queens 15-3 from behind the arc and converted for 27 points off of 25 Queens' turnovers earning the 81-78 come-from-behind victory.
Erskine's Audrey Timmerman led the Fleet with 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Freshman Porsha Morgan posted 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Two other Erskine players reached double digits. Elizabeth Tatum had 13 points and 6 rebounds while Lauren Brendle put up 10 points of her own.
Queens will be off until December 30 when they head to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 6:00 PM game. The Fleet will hit the road this Saturday as they play at Barton College. Tip off is 5:30.
