Queens Advances to Conference Semifinals!

Striano’s game-winner lifts Queens over St. Andrews

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Sami Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside )broke104 minutes of scoreless soccer to lift the Queens University of Charlotte Royals over the Saint Andrew's Presbyterian College (SAPC) 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas tournament Monday night at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex.

Despite not scoring until the second overtime period, Queens (11-8-2/10-0-1 CC) dominated the Knights (8-7-3/4-5-2 CC) offensively throughout most of the contest. The Knights registered just four shots, with their only shot on goal coming in the first 25 minutes of play. Goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )was able to push the ball wide of the net to keep the score evened at zero.

The Queens offense put a flurry of shots on Knights' keeper Garrison Burton during the second 45. The Royals put eight shots up and did not give up a single shot to the visitors. Striano, Kari Byzewski (Virginia Beach, Va., Salem )and Erin Saleeby (Rocky Mount, Va., Franklin County )all tested Burton late in the half, but she made some keys saves for SAPC.

At the end of regulation the score remained 0-0, the same can be said for the first overtime period. Queens again out-shot the Knights, this time 4-1.

The break came for the Royals when the clock read 103:30. Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's ) carried the ball down the field, beat her defender, pulled the keeper out of the goal and crossed the ball for Striano to drill the ball home on an empty net.

The shutout is Kornacki's fifth in conference play and she has not given up a conference goal in 373 minutes.

The win ends SAPC's season and guarantees the Conference Carolinas Regular Season Co-Champions at least one more game.

Queens will host Pfeiffer University on Thursday, November 6, with a time to be announced. The Falcons are the No. 3 seed and defeated Erskine College 2-0 earlier in the day.
