COLUMBUS, Ga.- The Queens University of Charlotte held the No. 8 team in the country, Columbus State University, scoreless for almost the entire first half today in the second game of the Peach Belt/Conference Carolinas Challenge in Columbus, Ga. The Royals fell to the hosts 3-0 and drop to 5-7-2 on the season. The Cougars improve to 12-3.
Queens held Columbus State scoreless for 10 seconds shy of the entire first half. Jordan McKenzie notched the game-winning goal with the help of Sarah Hawkins.
The Royals defense saw eight shots in the first half with goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )making five saves. Queens was unable to get a shot off during the first 45.
Goals two and three for the Cougars were scored a little over two minutes apart with just under 10 minutes to play in the game.
Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood ) registered the only shot for Queens and the game and forced Columbus State goalie Monica Sanches to make a save. Overall, Queens was out-shot 14-1 and Kornacki made six saves.
The Royals were able to earn one corner kick in the contest and cut the Cougars six corner kicks in the first half down to three in the second.
Queens resumes Conference Carolinas action on Oct. 15 as they host Lees-McRae College at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park at 5pm.
