Royals Name Assistant Basketball Coaches

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 14, 2003) -- Queens University of Charlotte Head Men's Basketball Coach Barclay Radebaugh has finalized his decision to hire three qualified individuals to assist him in his first year as head coach of the Royals. Mike Summey, Loren Baysden, and Carey Clarke will be on board for the first year of a new coaching era in Queens basketball history.

"I am extremely pleased with the additions of Mike Summey, Loren Baysden, and Carey Clarke to the Queens University of Charlotte family, and specifically to our basketball staff," Radebaugh said. "Each brings unique and important talents that will serve our university, department of athletics, and basketball program well."

Summey is returning to North Carolina after a four-year stint at Saint Francis University (Penn.). While at SFU, Summey served as the assistant coach and oversaw recruiting operations in addition to working primarily with the perimeter players. While earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at North Carolina State University (1997), Summey served as a video and film coordinator. Upon completion of his degree, Summey continued his work at NCSU as Head Manager and helped Head Coach Herb Sendek's transition with the Wolfpack.

"Growing up in Hickory, N.C., I have long been aware of the excellence that is Queens University of Charlotte. To have the opportunity to join Coach Radebaugh and continue that tradition is a dream come true," Summey said.

Baysden shares ties with Coach Radebaugh at the University of South Carolina under both former Coach Eddie Fogler and current Coach Dave Odom. Baysden volunteered his time as a member of the coaching staff during the 1998-99 and 2001-02 seasons. Prior to arriving at Queens, his most recent coaching endeavor was as an assistant at Cape Fear Community College. A native of Irmo, S.C., Baysden played post and perimeter positions at Montreat College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Management in 2001. In 2003, he also completed his Master of Arts degree in Teaching.

"I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to coach at Queens University of Charlotte. I am very confident that with the leadership and coaching of Coach Radebaugh and the rest of our staff, accompanied with hard work from each player, great success will be reached on and off the court," Baysden said.

The third and final member of the Royals coaching staff will be the former head coach at South Mecklenburg High School, Carey Clarke. Clarke has been a well-known and respected coach throughout the Greater Charlotte Area for the past 10 years. His past six seasons were spent at South Meck: and, in 1999 The Charlotte Observer named him High School Coach of the Year. Last season his team went 23-6. Clarke made the decision to give up his coaching responsibilities at South Meck to volunteer his talents assisting Coach Radebaugh.

"Queens has built a proud basketball tradition in such a short time. I'm excited to be part of such a strong program under the strong coaching leadership of Barclay Radebaugh," Clarke said.
