CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball earned a straight-set victory over Presbyterian, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21), Saturday afternoon inside Curry Arena. The Royals improved to 3-6 on the season with the win. Queens overcame early deficits in each of the first two sets before closing out the match with a late comeback in the third. The Royals finished the afternoon with 38 kills, 28 assists, nine service aces and 46 digs.
MATCH NOTES
- Elizabeth Layson led the Royals from the service line with five aces (a career-high), while Tyler Peluso added three.
- Callie DeSchryver led Queens with 10 kills, followed by Emma Norris with nine.
- Peluso recorded three kills on four attacks without an error while adding 11 assists and six digs.
- Naomi Cole contributed five kills on 15 attacks with just one error, hitting .267.
- Destiny Wiggins paced the Royals defensively with 15 digs, while Layson added eight.
- Marlee Cook finished with 13 assists and four digs.
- The Royals limited Presbyterian to a .125 hitting percentage for the match.
SET ONE (Queens 25, Presbyterian 16)
Presbyterian jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage before Queens began to settle in. The Royals eventually pulled even at 9-9 and took their first lead at 10-9. Queens extended the advantage to 16-13 before Layson took over from the service line, recording back-to-back aces to push the lead to 21-15. The Royals closed the opening frame on a 4-0 run to take the set, 25-16.
SET TWO (Queens 25, Presbyterian 17)
Presbyterian again established an early lead, going ahead 7-2. Queens steadily worked its way back and tied the set at 12-12, with Peluso recording consecutive service aces during the comeback. The Royals then took control with a 6-1 run to move ahead 18-13. Queens maintained the advantage the rest of the way, closing the set 25-17 to take a 2-0 match lead.
SET THREE (Queens 25, Presbyterian 21)
Presbyterian held the advantage for much of the third set, leading 7-4 before extending its lead to 12-7. The Blue Hose maintained a four-point advantage at 19-15, but Queens responded with a late push. Layson delivered back-to-back aces as the Royals pulled even at 20-20 and moved in front, 21-20. Queens continued to hold the momentum, taking a 24-21 lead before DeSchryver finished the match with a kill for the 25-21 victory.
"The team did a great job of overcoming a slow start this season by having lots of confidence and playing together as a team," head coach Matt Stolz said. "Very excited for the future of this program. Getting ready for a tough Tennessee team next week. Going to be working on getting better every day."
