Grayson Childers Named ASUN Player of the Week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Queens University of Charlotte first baseman Grayson Childers earned his first Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) Baseball Player of the Week honor, the league office announced on Monday, May 11.

Childers hit .500 (7-for-14) to lead Queens to a 2-2 week, which included three home runs, eight runs scored and six RBI. The 6-foot-3 junior from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, started his week with a 2-for-3 night at the plate with two home runs and three runs scored (both season highs) in an 11-7 win at Duke University.

"This is an awesome recognition for a guy who has gotten better and better all year. I am extremely proud of his commitment to excellence on and off the field," said Queens Head Coach Jake Hendrick, who recorded his 200th career win over the weekend with the help of Childers' performance.

The May 5 win at Duke was Queens' first program win over an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team and second of the season against a Power 4 team. His solo home run in the first inning gave the Royals an early lead, and he added a two-run insurance home run in the top of the ninth inning to extend Queens' lead to four runs.

He delivered another two-run homer in the ninth inning of Friday's  10-6 loss to North Florida as part ofa  3-for-4 night, and also scored twice. On Saturday, his RBI fielder's choice gave Queens a 3-2 lead and he scored the winning run in the 4-3 walk-off victory over the ASUN Graphite Division leading Ospreys. He also had one hit and one run scored in Sunday's series finale, scoring the Royals' only run in the top of the first inning.

Childers has now reached base in 11-straight games and leads Queens with a  .331 batting average with 33 runs scored, 13 doubles, 11 home runs and 30 RBI. He has 32 walks.

This is the third ASUN weekly honor for Queens this season. Joey Ruller received ASUN Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 23 and March 23. Ruller was a nominee for the May 11 Pitcher of the Week honor, which went to Eastern Kentucky's Jacob Price.

Queens (15-35, 10-17) will host Elon University for its final non-conference game on Tuesday, May 12 at 6 p.m., before hosting Stetson University for a three-game ASUN series this weekend. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on QUSN with all three weekend games on ESPN+.
