DELAND, FLA. – Despite a tough 2-0 setback against Stetson in Sunday's ASUN series finale at Patricia Wilson Field, the Queens University of Charlotte softball team showed fight on both sides of the ball, holding the Hatters to just two hits over six innings and playing error-free defense throughout the day.
Freshman Taylor Jones continued her strong development in the circle, delivering a complete-game performance for the Royals. The right-hander scattered just two hits and struck out two over six innings of work. Aside from a two-run home run in the second inning, Jones kept the Hatters in check, forcing 12 groundouts. The right-hander faced 24 batters and threw 86 pitches in her complete-game effort.
Queens' defense backed her up, turning in a perfect game in the field. Lindsey DeRoeck was a standout with 12 putouts, and junior shortstop Madyson Daughtry added five assists as part of a steady infield.
At the plate, the Royals put together several quality at-bats and drew four walks. Senior Natalie Windham reached base twice, and DeRoeck delivered the team's lone hit. Lauren Byrd and Emma Frye each contributed to the offensive push with a walk apiece, helping Queens put pressure on the Stetson pitching staff.
