Queens Softball Battles Michigan and NC State in Raleigh Doubleheader

RALEIGH, N.C. — Despite a hard-fought effort, the Queens University of Charlotte softball team fell in both games at the Raleigh Times on Saturday, March 1, dropping a 10-1 decision to Michigan before falling 8-0 to NC State.

GAME ONE: Queens 1, Michigan 10

  • Michigan got on the board early in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs from three hits.
  • Michigan added another three runs in the bottom of the second inning with a bases-clearing double from Putz.
  • After two scoreless innings for the Royals, Queens struck first in the top of the third when Olivia Thornton launched a solo home run over the outfield fence; the first of her collegiate career.
  • The Wolverines tacked on three more in the fifth to finish off the game. 
  • Taylor Jones (1-for-2) added a double, continuing her consistent hitting.
  • Makala Strickland (1-for-2) recorded the other hit for the Royals.
  • The Queens pitching staff of Taylor Jones and Abby Craver combined for four Ks from the circle.

GAME TWO: NC State 8, Queens 0

  • NC State wasted no time in the first inning, scoring three runs after an early error from the Royals and timely hitting.
  • The Wolfpack added one run in the second and another in the fourth before sealing the game with three more in the sixth.
  • Emma Frye (2-for-2) was a bright spot for the Royals, collecting two of the team's four hits.
  • Lindsey DeRoeck (1-for-3) and Lauren Byrd (1-for-2) also contributed key hits in the matchup.
  • Taylor Jones, who pitched five innings, snagged three strikeouts against the Wolfpack. 

UP NEXT
The Royals will stick in Raleigh for the third day of the "Raleigh Times" Tournament. The Royals face NC State again at 12:30 PM tomorrow, March 2. The game will be streamed on ACCNX.
