CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens Royals secured their first conference win of the season in a thrilling rivalry match against nearby Belmont Abbey. The game had everything expected from a fierce rivalry, big hits, high emotion, and plenty of tries.
Belmont Abbey came out firing early, scoring two quick tries and converting one to take a 12-0 lead within the first 10 minutes. However, Queens stayed composed, and the forwards began to take control at the set piece. Senior
Roan Shawver powered through defenders for a physical 20-meter run to put the Royals on the board, followed by a successful conversion from
Hilton Olivier. Soon after,
Jack Rice finished a strong attacking sequence with a try in the corner, giving Queens a 14-12 lead.
Belmont Abbey answered back to reclaim a 19-14 advantage, but senior
Tomas Mussi had the final say before halftime, scoring after a dominant scrum and several hard-earned phases. The Royals entered the break ahead 21-19.
The second half was all Queens as the Royals' forwards completely took over, dominating scrums, lineouts, and every phase of play. Belmont Abbey failed to score again, while Queens continued to pile on points, ultimately winning 47-19.
With the victory, the Royals move to third place in the conference standings and firmly into the hunt for a spot in the conference championship.
Next up, Queens will host
Thomas More University for
Senior Day this Friday night, October 17, under the lights.
