CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte men's rugby team showcased skill, structure, and composure in a hard-fought 33–20 victory over Walsh University. The win moves the Royals to the No. 2 spot in the conference, earning them a matchup with St. Bonaventure in Washington, D.C., on Friday, November 7, for the conference championship and a potential bye week in the national playoffs.
Queens started strong, setting the tone early with a powerful rolling maul that drove over the line. Hooker CJ Thompson finished the effort, and scrumhalf
Hilton Olivier added the conversion to give the Royals a 7–0 lead.
Building on that momentum, Queens extended its advantage after Olivier spotted a gap and delivered a quick snipe pass to No. 8 Emile Van Dyk, who burst through to score under the posts. Olivier stayed perfect from the tee, making it 14–3.
Queens continued to control possession and territory behind dominant forward play and sharp execution in the backline. Early in the second half,
Tomas Mussi capitalized on sustained pressure to score another try, with Olivier adding the conversion to push the score to 21–10.
The Royals weren't done yet. A smooth attacking sequence saw
Jack Rice thread a perfectly timed pass to
Everette Boyd, who crossed the line for Queens' fourth try. The conversion attempt narrowly missed, leaving the score at 26–13.
In the closing minutes, Queens sealed the match with a textbook lineout drive.
Tertius Dietrechsen powered through for the final try of the day, and Olivier's reliable boot made it 33–20.
It was a complete performance for the Royals, highlighted by strong set pieces, accurate kicking, and teamwork across all phases. With the victory, Queens rides into the conference championship full of confidence and momentum as they look to claim the title and a playoff bye in Washington, D.C.
