JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team landed a pair of Royals on the 2024 Atlantic Sun postseason honors and awards list, as officially released by the league on Monday afternoon.
Dillon Lewis was named First Team All-Conference while
Jake Barbour earned All-Freshman Team recognition.
"These are the type of postseason accolades we want to come to expect," said Queens head baseball coach
Jake Hendrick. It's all about building blocks right now, and those two guys set the bar in a good spot for what we expect to see."
Dillon Lewis, a junior outfielder put together a historic season which featured breaking the program's single-season hits, runs, home runs, and RBI records. Lewis started all 55 games for the blue and gold and hit a team-high .371 with 14 doubles, 22 home runs, 63 RBIs, 62 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases. Against Bellarmine, Lewis joined Vance Honeycutt from North Carolina as the only two players in Division 1 this season to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases.
This season, the Charlotte native ranked top 10 in the league in batting average, runs, hits, home runs, RBIs, and stolen bases. Lewis finished the year ranked 17
th in the country in home runs as he set the single-season program record with 22 blasts. Lewis turned in the longest Division 1 on-base streak in program history as the junior reached successfully in 24 straight games.
"Dillon was tremendous this season. Hats off to the work he and James put in together for him to create the level of confidence that it takes to have the year that he had. The combination of speed and power is very rare in a player, and we want our players to showcase their tools and Dillon took full advantage of that."
Joining Lewis on the postseason honors list was rookie
Jake Barbour. The freshman infielder was one of the league's top freshmen starting all 50 appearances and hitting .249 with seven doubles, eight home runs, 31 RBIs, and 42 runs scored. On the bases, Barbour swiped 14-of-16 attempts. The Raleigh native tied
Dillon Lewis for the most home runs hit in a single season in program history by a true freshman.
On the year, Barbour turned in 14 multi-hit performances as he recorded a hit in 29-of-50 games. Barbour recorded a 10-game hitting streak to begin the back half of the season which was the longest by a Royal on the year.
"Jake had a great year. It isn't easy to be an everyday guy as a freshman. I'm most excited about what the future will hold for Jake. I believe this is just the beginning for him and a small sample of the contributions he will make for Queens Baseball."
The duo became the second and third players to land ASUN postseason honors in program history. The two joined
Riley Cheek who was named Second Team All-Conference and the ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year last season.
Lewis and Barbour helped the Royals to a 14-41 overall record, and a 10-20 mark in ASUN play. Queens just wrapped up their second season in Division 1 which featured a record-breaking year. The Royals offense blasted a single season program record 89 home runs which ranked second in the conference and top 40 in the country. On the bases, the Royals aggression allowed them to steal 71 bags, the second most in a single season.
