Royals Fall in 14 Innings to Stetson

THE SHORT STORY
Queens University of Charlotte fell 5-4 in 14 innings tonight against visiting Stetson University in Atlantic Sun play. Both teams combined for 100 at-bats, 17 walks, and 19 hits in a game that took five hours and seven minutes. The Royals tied for the most innings pitched in program history tonight. With the win, the Hatters claimed the series.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With one down in the top of the first, Justin Hudson reached first on a fielder's choice and later scored on Lenox Lively's RBI single to left center to put Queens up 1-0 before the inning ended.
- Stetson grabbed the lead in the top of the second off a two-run single to make it 2-1.
- The Royals in the bottom of the seventh got things rolling when a pitch hit Mitchell Basterrechea and then advanced to second off Charlie Marcentel's single to left. Following a foul out to the catcher, Dylan Schaefer's RBI double down the left field line scored both runners to give Queens a 3-2 lead. Schaefer later scored on Logan Norris' RBI fielder's choice to push the lead to 4-2 before the frame ended.
- Stetson in the eighth cut the lead to 4-3 off a sacrifice fly to left center, and then in the ninth tied the game at four with an RBI single up the middle.
- Queens in the twelfth inning threatened when it had the winning run on second with two outs, but a groundout to the pitcher ended the inning.
- Both teams in the thirteenth had the winning run on second, but neither team could score them.
- The Hatters in the fourteenth, got a one-out single to left, but an error by the left fielder allowed the runner to advance all the way to third. He later scored on a single, putting Stetson up 5-4.
- Queens in the bottom of the fourteenth got the tying run on first with two outs, but a strikeout ended the game.

BY THE NUMBERS
- Both teams combined for 100 at-bats (Queens: 50; Stetson: 50).
- The 14 innings tied for the most in the program's history and seventh in the ASUN. The last time it happened in the conference was on April 29, 2022, between Liberty and Stetson. The last time Queens went 14 innings pitched was on March 26, 2022, at Newberry College.
- Starter Jackson Gowan allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two in four and two-thirds innings.
- Reliever Johnny Joseph took the loss to fall to 0-2. He allowed a run on four hits in two innings. He finished with three strikeouts.
- Schaefer tallied Queens' only extra base hit with a double, while tallying two RBIs and a run scored.
- Anibal Rivera, Childers, Lively, Basterrechea, Marcantel, and Norris all tallied a hit. Lively and Norris each recorded an RBI.
- Basterrechea, Marcantel, and Justin Hudson all scored a run.
