The Short Story:Â The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped a tough extra-innings affair at Tennessee Tech despite scoring six runs over the final two frames.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Tennessee Tech jumped on the board first plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Following three consecutive walks, the Golden Eagles capitalized with a one-out bases-clearing triple.
-The Golden Eagles would stay hot early plating two more runs on two hits in the second inning. Preston Ford led off the inning with a double to left field before Jackson Green worked a walk. The runners would advance 90 feet on stolen bases before Hayden Gilliland brought home Ford with an RBI infield single. A wild pitch would bring home Gilliland to extend the early lead to 5-0.
-Queens would cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth behind a clutch two-out swing from
Jake Barbour.
Matthew Corlew started the rally with a two-out single through the left side before Barbour ripped an RBI double to left center to cut the deficit to 5-1.
-After being held scoreless for three straight frames, the Golden Eagles added a run in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 6-1. With runners on the corners and one out, Hayden Gilliland singled to second base to plate a run.
-Queens would answer big in the top of the eighth inning with four runs on two hits and two Golden Eagles errors. The Royals used four doubles in the inning, including three straight which was capped off by a
Will Budnick shot to right center to cut the deficit to 6-5.
-Tennessee Tech would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth behind three walks and an intentional walk.
-Queens would tie it up in the top of the ninth behind one swing of the bat.
Matthew Corlew started the inning by reaching on a throwing error by the Golden Eagles shortstop. After stealing second, freshman
Jake Barbour belted a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence to tie the game 7-7.
-Tennessee Tech would secure the series in the 10
th inning behind two hits. Troy Baunsgard opened the inning with a double down the right-field line to start the rally. However, Queens reliever
Joseph Rodriguez worked consecutive flyouts as he looked to escape the jam. The Golden Eagles would extend the inning by reaching on a throwing error before an RBI single to right field ended the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
-Freshman reliever
Logan Schmitt turned in a quality 5.2 innings of relief allowing just two earned runs on five hits. The performance was the longest outing by a Queens reliever this season.
-Fellow freshman
Jake Barbour was hot at the plate going 3-for-4, including a pair of doubles and a home run. The rookie joined
Zach Weston and
Matthew Corlew on the list of Royals to hit two doubles in the same game this year.
-Veteran
Zach Weston turned in a 4-for-5 evening at the plate, including an RBI and a double. The Charlotte native extended his on-base streak to six straight games and his hitting streak to four straight games.
-
Matthew Corlew made his 13
th start in the outfield and put together a 2-for-5 game with two runs scored.
-Veterans
Tyler Cotto,
Will Budnick, and
Tyler Peters rounded out the offense with a base hit each.
-Despite taking the loss, reliever
Joseph Rodriguez gave the Royals a chance tossing 2.0 innings allowing just one run while striking out a pair.
-The ninth-inning home run from
Jake Barbour was the Royals 30
th of the year as they are tied for sixth in the country in home runs.
