Royals Bested by FGCU in ASUN Opener

FORT MYERS, FLA. — The Queens softball program fell in their first ASUN doubleheader of the season by scores of 3-0 and 5-0 on Saturday, March 16.


GAME ONE NOTABLES

  • The Royals suffered their first no-hitter of the season in the first game of the day, as reigning ASUN Pitcher of the Week Angelina Bonilla of Florida Gulf Coast finished inside the circle with six strikeouts.
  • The game was knotted up at 0-0 for the majority of the game until the fifth inning, when the Eagles pieced together an RBI triple from Riley Oakes to send a run home.
  • The Eagles would score their next two runs in the bottom of the sixth with a three-hit rally consisting of two doubles and a single.
  • Autumn Courtney and the defense held off the Eagles for the first four innings, as the sophomore pitched a six full innings garnering five strikeouts.
 

GAME TWO NOTABLES

  • An early walk to Ashlyn Mickler got the Royals on base in the top of the first inning. A stolen base and a a groundout from Haley Hmiel got Mickler on third before she was picked off at third base to end the half-inning.
  • The Eagles gained an advantage in the bottom of the inning, tabbing three hits and scoring two before a solid Royals 763 combo got the FGCU runner at home to end the inning.
  • Jordan Dunn would come into the circle in relief of Abby Craver, and the Eagles would score two more runs in the bottom of the second inning from a sacrifice bunt RBI and a groundout.
  • The Royals would threaten next in the top of the fourth inning, but a groundout would leave a Royal on base before scoring.
  • FGCU would find another run in the bottom of the fifth from a Royals error before a flyout would end the inning.
  • Kaylee DeJesus would snag the only Royals hit for the day in the top of the sixth inning with a single through the left side before the side was retired.
  • In their final at-bat in the top of the seventh, Roxanne Hensel would reach after being hit by the pitch, but a 263 double play and a popup to second base would finish off the 5-0 FGCU win.
