Queens Pushes North Alabama to the Limit, Falls in Five-Setter

FLORENCE, ALA.  — The Royals finished off their weekend on the road against North Alabama in a hard-fought five-setter, eventually falling by a 3-2 decision.

Queens came out strong in the first set on offense. Led by Kendall Buish on the assist, Queens capitalized on North Alabama's attack errors to build an early lead. The Royals saw notable kills from Jordyn Johnson and Kayla McDuffie, while Alleigh Johnson clinched the set with three consecutive kills, closing it out 25-20.

The Royals continued their momentum in the second set. Queens benefitted from several attack errors by Jasmine Brooks and Meredith Brown of the Lions along with key defensive plays from Emma Norris later in the set to settle in. This set saw balanced contributions across the lineup - with McDuffie, Buish, and Sparks each securing kills to hold off the Lions and secure the second set by a 25-20 score.

North Alabama found their rhythm in the third set. North Alabama's Brown and Brooks capitalized on opportunities and controlled the offense. Despite efforts from Queens' McDuffie and Norris, the Royals couldn't keep pace, dropping the set 17-25.

Queens regrouped in the fourth, with a versatile McDuffie contributing critical points. The Royals built a lead, but North Alabama's defense combined with timely kills from Reese Ricketts and Nicole Sargent kept the game within reach. Queens fought to the end, but a series of attacks from North Alabama led to a narrow 23-25 loss.

In the decisive fifth set, North Alabama took an early lead. Queens' defense, particularly from libero Tilley Collins, kept the team close but North Alabama's relentless kicked into gear midway through the frame. The Royals managed several impressive blocks from the Bush and McDuffie duo, but North Alabama's Brooks and Sargent secured the final points, ending the set 11-15.

ROYAL RUNDOWN

  • Kendall Bush put up a season-high 56 assists on the day. It was her first time surpassing 50 assists in a match this season, and was the first time since Oct. 1 of 2023.
  • Two Royals put up 17 kills apiece on the day to lead the match - Alleigh Johnson and Kayla McDuffie. McDuffie's 17 kills was a career-high for the senior. \McDuffie also hit a .469 clip on the day, the highest of the match.
  • The Royals hit an impressive .425 in the first frame. 
  • Tilley Collins put up a match-leading 31 digs, a career-high.
