CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team fought tough against Jacksonville, but ultimately fell in three tightly contested sets (20-25, 20-25, 20-25) at the Levine Center on Sunday, Oct. 13.
SET BY SET RECAP
The opening set was a tug-of-war from the start. Queens struck early with kills from Kayla McDuffie and Alleigh Johnson, but Jacksonville quickly responded, tying the score multiple times. Both teams traded points until it was locked at 10-10 after a key kill by Emma Norris, who finished the match with seven kills and a .467 hitting percentage.
Queens showcased strong defense, with blocks from Norris and Jordyn Johnson keeping them zoned in. A kill by McDuffie gave Queens a slight edge at 13-12, but Jacksonville's Claire Mrukowski turned the momentum. Mrukowski tallied seven kills, including the one that sealed the set at 25-20 in favor of Jacksonville. Queens struggled to break Jacksonville's rhythm despite solid attacking from McDuffie, who had four kills in the first set.
In the second set, Queens came out strong. Kendall Buish, who finished the match with 35 assists, set up effective plays for McDuffie and Norris early, giving Queens a 5-3 lead. However, Jacksonville's offensive weapons Breanna McDonough and Mrukowski pushed back to tie the game at 12-12. An ace from Alleigh Johnson and a strong defensive effort from Jesse George, who had 13 digs on the day, kept the Royals competitive.
Despite kills from Norris and McDuffie later on in the frame, Jacksonville maintained control with McDonough and Ana Tobar delivering key points to close out the set. Queens made a late push, pulling within 20-23 after an attack error by Jacksonville, but a kill from Mrukowski and a block by Amina Dervisevic secured the second set for the Dolphins, 25-20.
The third set began with both teams trading points yet again, as neither could pull away early. Queens leaned heavily on McDuffie while Norris and Ellis Sargent combined for crucial points to keep the score level at 15-15. The Royals soon led 18-17 after a service ace from Alleigh Johnson. However, Jacksonville responded - a service ace by Kristina Nika and back-to-back kills from McDonough flipped the momentum, allowing Jacksonville to soon take a 23-19 lead. Though Queens fought off one match point with a kill by McDuffie, Jacksonville finished with another kill from Mrukowski to win the set 25-20.
