Cameron Coons Joins Baseball Staff as Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte head baseball coach Jake Hendrick is pleased to welcome Cameron Coons to the staff as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Coons comes to the Queen City following a two-year stint as an assistant at Marshall University.

"I am very excited about the final addition to the staff," said Coach Hendrick. "Cameron is going to be great in a lot of areas, but I am most excited to see him dominate recruiting. We are all pumped to have Cameron and his fiancé Taylor joining us in Charlotte!"

With the Herd, Coons oversaw and facilitated skill development which featured the coaching and implementation of biomechanical and analytical information for player development. Under his direction in 2021, Coons developed First Team All-Conference USA recipient Luke Edward as well as Ryan Leitch, a Johnny Bench Watch List recipient and current catcher in the Philadelphia Phillies organizations.

"I'm super excited to follow Cameron at Queens University," said Next Level Base founder, Jeff Waggoner. "He will bring a high level of recruiting as well as a passion for developing players. His ability to connect with players and energy as a fierce competitor will help Queens build into a championship program."

Prior to serving at Marshall, Coons was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Snead State Community College in Alabama. Coons assembled a recruiting class in 2022 that produced a school record for wins, as well as its first Alabama state title and advancement to the JUCO World Series. The year prior, Coons led the Parsons to the ACCC North Regular Season title which resulted in two players being named First Team All-Region. That success led Coons to be named the 2021 Assistant Coach of the Year for the state of Alabama.

"Cameron has a special type of energy on the field," said West Virginia Associate Head Coach Steve Sabins. "He brings positivity, enthusiasm, and professionalism that will add value in any area that he touches. His hard work and attention to detail will make an instant impact on Queens University. I'm excited for his future and the future of Queens Baseball."

Over the previous summers, Coons has spent time in various collegiate leagues as an assistant coach. Most recently, Coons was an assistant with the Amsterdam Mohawks where he led the squad to the Championship Series of the PGCBL. The Mohawks led the league in hits, runs, slugging percentage, RBI's, and total bases. Coons coached and developed Matt Shaw, the 13th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs.

After breaking into the summer coaching ranks in 2017, Coons has served as an assistant for the Syracuse Spartans, the Ripken Experience, Perfect Game, and Alabama Coaches Association.

"I am grateful and excited for the opportunity to join Queens University Athletics," said Coons. "Queens University as a whole is a special place, and I thank Coach Hendrick for the opportunity to be a part of it!"

The Royals are coming off their first Division 1 season going 17-38 overall and 9-21 in league play. Queens embarked on a challenging schedule that featured outings against #23 South Carolina, #12 East Carolina, #15 FGCU, and #13 North Carolina. The Royals produced the ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Second Team All-Conference standout, Riley Cheek. Two Royals were named ASUN All-Academic Team in the classroom while five landed College Sports Communicators Academic All-District recognition.
