Queens and Winthrop Set for I-77 Showdown in Rock Hill

ROCK HILL, S.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team will make the short trip south to Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina on Tuesday evening to face the Eagles. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 PM on ESPN Plus from Winthrop Coliseum.

THE MATCHUP
Tuesday night will be the fifth all-time matchup between Queens and Winthrop and the first since 2010 when the Eagles defeated the Royals 70-61. Before 2010, the teams played four times between 1990 and 1994 where the Royals and Eagles each won two matchups apiece. This will be the sixth matchup all-time, with each occurring in Rock Hill.
 
SCOUTING THE ROYALS (5-4 overall, 0-0 ASUN)
  • The Royals are coming off a week where they defeated Gardner-Webb on a last-second three-pointer before setting a program record with 134 points and 22 three-pointers in a 134-69 victory over Carolina Christian.
  • Chris Ashby has been on fire from beyond the arc, nailing 13 three-pointers over the last two games. He tied a career-high with seven threes against Gardner-Webb last Wednesday and set a career-high with 23 points. The Houston native sits fourth in three-point field goal percentage.
  • Freshman Kobe George is coming off of a career-best performance against Carolina Christian where he scored 24 points in 22 minutes off the bench. George also shot 6-8 from beyond the arc in the performance.
  • The Royals had seven players score in double figures in Friday's victory along with 76 points off the bench.
  • AJ McKee is the leading scorer for the Royals, averaging 17.1 points per game, and has scored at least 10 points in every game this season along with 15+ points in five of the nine games. The junior is sixth in the league in scoring and sits top 25 in rebounding, assists, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, and steals.
  • Deyton Albury, BJ McLaurin, and Chris Ashby join McKee averaging double-digit points per game this season.
  • BJ McLaurin is the leading rebounder for the Royals, averaging 6.4 per game. McLaurin also secured a double-double last Wednesday with 24 points and 12 rebounds against Gardner-Webb.
  • Georgetown transfer Malcolm Wilson is coming off a 12-point and nine-rebound performance. The 12 points were a season-high while the nine boards were a career-high.
  • Jacobi Sebock is coming off a week in which he averaged 11.0 points and nine rebounds per game. Against Carolina Christian, Sebock poured in a season-high 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
  • The Royals are 0-4 in true road games this season but 2-0 against Big South Conference oppositions with victories over High Point and Gardner-Webb.
 
SCOUTING THE EAGLES (6-3 overall, 0-0 Big South)
  • The Eagles are coming off a road victory in Conway, South Carolina where they defeated Coastal Carolina 90-87.
  • In the game against the Chanticleers, KJ Doucet and Alex Timmermann each scored 20+ points. Timmermann finished with a double-double and Doucet was a rebound shy of the same feat.
  • Doucet and Kelton Talford are the leading scorers for the Eagles, averaging 13.2 and 13.1 points per game respectively.
  • Winthrop is 6-3 on the season and 5-1 in Rock Hill, their only loss at home to Drexel 74-72 on November 11th. Over the last five seasons, the Eagles are 51-10 at home.
  • The Eagles are one of the country's best teams at getting to the free-throw line. Winthrop attempts the 17th most shots from the charity stripe at 27.9 per game and makes the 19th most.
  • Mark Prosser is in his third season at the helm of the Eagles program. Under his direction, the Eagles are 44-29.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
Following this matchup, the Royals return home for a matchup against another non-NCAA foe in Carolina University. This will be the first-ever matchup between the Royals and Bruins. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. inside Curry Arena and the game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.
