CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queen's University of Charlotte women's basketball team picked up a win against USC Upstate in a Friday mid-afternoon matchup at Curry Arena.

Alexandria Johnson tied a career-high with 22 points and Nicole Gwynn added 20 as the guards dominated to a 61-51 win and the first win over a Division I opponent of the season for Queens.

  • Alexandria Johnson and Jordyn Weaver each had strong first halves, combining for 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting between the two 
  • Johnson tied a career-high with 22 points which she also scored last season against Jacksonville State

Notable Moments 
  • After the Spartans jumped to an early 7-2 lead, the Royals followed with a 7-0 run which gave them a 9-7 lead going into the first media timeout 
  • After taking a 16-12 lead into the second quarter, the Royals came out firing out of the break after a three-pointer by Alexandria Johnson and a mid-range jumper by Jordyn Weaver forced the Spartans to take a timeout and gave Queens a 21-12 lead with 8:40 until halftime 
  • Both teams experienced extended scoring droughts during the middle part of the second quarter. The Spartans experienced a 4+ minute drought as they were stuck at 19 points and were down 23-19. During this period, Nicole Gwynn sunk a three-pointer which led to three straight possessions with a bucket for the Royals as they took a 30-19 lead with less than 2 minutes until halftime 
  • Following an injury to Jordyn Weaver in the third quarter, the Spartans shot their way back into the game and only trailed by one heading into the fourth quarter 
  • The fourth quarter was highly competitive as both sides clawed for the lead. After a stoppage with 1:54 left, the Royals held a 53-51 lead 
  • Immediately after this stoppage, Queens scored a couple of unanswered buckets to take a 57-51 lead. A turnover from the Spartans with 15 seconds left essentially clinched the game for the Royals. 
Inside the Boxscore 
  • The Royals outshot the Spartans as Queens shot 40% from the field to Upstate's 31%.  
  • At the free throw line, the Royals shot 82% while the Spartans shot 56% 
  • The Royals shot 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter which helped seal the victory 
  • Beyond the arc, the Royals shot 3-for-9 as the Spartans shot 3-for-18 
Next Up 
The Royals travel west to take on UNC Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina on Tuesday, November 21st at 2:00 PM. This will be the second-ever meeting between the Royals and Bulldogs as UNCA defeated Queens 68-57 last November in Curry Arena. The Royals return home the following Sunday to host Division III Wesleyan College.
