Queens Men’s Track & Field Captures Seventh Straight SAC Outdoor Championship; Women Take Second

ANDERSON, S.C. –  The Queens University of Charlotte men's track & field team captured its seventh straight South Atlantic Conference Track & Field Championship this evening to give the Royals their 100th conference tournament championship as a department. No. 12 Queens totaled 171 points to top Wingate who scored 148.5 points for second place on the men's side.

Queens' women, ranked 11th nationally, finished second with 177.5 points scored. The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears edged the defending champions for the title with a total of 181.5 points.

The Royals secured four first-place finishes today on the men's side to help solidify their win taking the stop step in the decathlon, 1500, 5000, and 400 hurdles.

In the decathlon, Stefan Jungmichel totaled a score of 6,711 to beat out his teammate Florian Daireaux who scored a 6,627. Both scores were NCAA provisional marks. Additionally, Simon Rey and Gabriel Brandi finished third and fourth to contribute points to the Royals' total.

In the 1500, Mitchel Cox took first in a time of 3:52.53 while Adam Wright finished third. Wright and Cox also finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 800.

Jan Lukas Becker picked up his second win at the meet, coming in first in the 5,000 in a time of 14:28.44. Mathurin Boutte followed in fifth.

Queens' final top finish was in the 400 hurdles where Mark Schittenhelm clocked a time of 53.09 seconds which was also an NCAA provisional time.

Also contributing to the men's point total was Niklas Klei who took second in the 400. Thrower Martin Knauer earned a pair of top-five finishes taking second in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 17.63 meters. He also took fifth in the discus throw while Amadeus was fifth in the shot put.

Queens Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jake Krolick was named SAC Men's Coach of the Year while Knauer earned SAC Men's Field Athlete of the Meet honors.

"The men overcame adversity after a misinterpretation of rules had Simon disqualified from the meet after missing the 110 hurdles race," Krolick commented. "So, he began the morning competing under protest in the decathlon. The decision was overturned, and he was reinstated in pole vault for the win. The team fed off that energy moving into the rest of Day two and took care of business. Jan, Adam, and Mitch pulled some big doubles and Martin came up big in all four throws. Gudmundur also came up big in the throws!"

Queens' women earned first place in five events today, winning the heptathlon, 1500, 5000, 100 hurdles, and 400 hurdles.

Lucy Walliker took first in the heptathlon with a score of 4,569, which was an NCAA provisional score. Cerys Lee followed in fifth place with a score of 4,038.

On the track, Fatima Alanis continued her stellar season for the Royals taking first in both the 1500 and 5000. Alanis clocked a time of 4:34.62 in the 1500 to finish ahead of Stevie Lawrence (2nd), Franca Henseleit (3rd), and Sarah Watts (4th). In the 5000, her time of 17:25.75 was ahead of Lawrence (3rd), Henseleit (5th), and Katharina Krosta (7th).

Melanie Welsing also had an impressive meet earning first place in both the 100 and 400 hurdles. Welsing clocked an NCAA provisional time of 13.86 seconds in the 100 hurdles and a time of 1:02.51 in the 400 hurdles. She also finished fourth in the triple jump to earn points for Queens along with Walliker who took sixth in the event.

Also securing points for Queens women were Carlin McFadden and Stina Pettersson. McFadden finished seventh in the 400 and eighth in the 800 while Pettersson took second in the 800. Additionally, Ashlee Lowe raced to a seventh-place finish in the 200 for points.

Thrower Christina Palmer earned the Royals' final points of the meet taking second in the discus throw with a mark of 40.58 meters and seventh in the shot put with a mark of 11.87 meters.

Following the meet, Alanis was named SAC Women's Track Athlete of the Meet after scoring 30 points for the women. Welsing led with 39 points while Walliker earned 26 and Lawrence earned 24.

"Outstanding efforts for the team and they gave us a chance," Krolick stated in reference to the four women. "They were inspiring everyone else to do their part too. Heartbreaking to be so close."

Queens will be back in action next weekend at Mt. Olive and Lee Last Chance Meets to try to secure additional qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships.
