Remarkable Effort Propels Royals Past No. 34 Wingate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team (5-4, 4-1 South Atlantic Conference) snapped a two-game losing skid by dominating South Atlantic Conference rival No. 34 Wingate University (4-4, 2-1 South Atlantic Conference) by a final score of 4-3 on Monday afternoon at the Howard Levine Tennis Center.

"This was our best overall performance of the year," said Royals Head Coach Billy Boykin. "From start to finish, all of our guys were locked in. This was an extremely taxing match—physically and mentally and I am so proud of our entire team. We really wanted this one and the boys left everything on the courts."

Queens picked up a pair of decisive wins in doubles play to clinch the point. The junior tandem of Edoardo Bottino and Edoardo Cecere defeated their opponents 6-1 at No. 1, while Win Steveker and Yoan Roussinov followed with a 6-2 win at No. 3.

Singles play opened with Edoardo Bottino, the No. 42 singles player in the nation, fighting back from being down 2-5 in the third to clinch the match for the Royals. The performance was one of the best that Coach Boykin has seen during his coaching tenure. "Over the last 25 years, I've seen a lot of high level tennis matches and what I saw from Edoardo Bottino today was something special," Boykin exclaimed. "He fought through cramps and what seemed to be an insurmountable 3rd set deficit to clinch this match for our team. It was all heart. It was one of the best individual performances I've ever seen from a Queens student-athlete."

Junior Edoardo Cecere, prefaced the fireworks with a dominating performance in his 6-3, 6-0 win to put the Royals up 2-0 at No. 2. "Edoardo Cecere was incredible today," said Boykin. "He is our hardest working and most disciplined player and his results this spring speak directly to his efforts every week. He teaches me something new every time I watch him compete," explained Boykin.

On the No. 6 court, Yoan Roussinov, won a 2.5 hour two set marathon to give the Royals a 3rd point. "I could not be more proud of Yoan today," said Boykin. "He put in the most complete performance of his career and he is a leader of our team. He really cares about his teammates and this program and I am so happy for him," stated Boykin.

Queens will stay home this week for a crucial non-conference region match on Wednesday, March 23rd against Lander University at 2 p.m. at the Howard Levine Tennis Center.
