Royals Claim a Pair of Top-Three Finishes at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

PITTSBURGH, Kan. – On day one of the 2022 NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championships, Fatima Alanis and Lucy Walliker,stole the show grabbing second and third-place finishes, respectively, in their events.
 
Alanis took second place in the 5,000-meter run, recording a career-best and new school record time of 16:06.90 to earn first-time all-American honors. Walliker earned all-American recognition for the first time in her career after taking third place in the high jump with a mark of 1.79-meters (5-10.5). The pair earned 14 points for the Royals at the meet, and Queens currently sits in fifth place on the women's side.
 
In addition, Melanie Welsing qualified for the 60-meter hurdles tomorrow after clocking a time of 8.50 seconds in today's prelims. Her time was a career-best and new school record in the event.  
 
Carlin McFadden raced in the women's 800-meter prelims, clocking a time of 2:10.59 which was a personal best. She will take second-team all-American honors for her performance.
 
Queens' women wrapped the day in the distance medley relay, taking 10th place in 11:45.64. The team was made up of Alanis, McFadden, Stina Pettersson, and Stevie Lawrence. They will earn all-American second-team honors for their finish.
 
For the men, Jan Lukas Becker clocked a time of 13:51.31 for ninth place and all-American second-team recognition in the 5,000-meter run. His time was also a new school record in the event.
 
Niklas Klei did not qualify for the 400-meter finals but finished 11th in 47.91 seconds. He will earn all-American second-team honors for his efforts as well.
 
Tomorrow, Mitchel Cox will race in the mile final after recording a time of 4:05.83 in the prelims, which was a career-best for the runner.
 
Lastly, Simon Rey kicked off the Championships for the Royals competing in the heptathlon this morning. Through four events, he sits 15th with a total of 2,830. His best event on the day was the shot put where he recorded the best toss of the group, 14.58 meters (47-10).
 
Day two of the NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championships will begin tomorrow at 11 a.m. Below is a schedule for the Royals competing.
