HICKORY, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's track and field teams swept the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships this afternoon for the first time since the 2016 season. The Championship win is the sixth for the men's team who ranks 13
th in the nation and the fourth for the ninth-ranked women.
Queens' women dominated the competition collecting 228 points to secure their win. Wingate was second with 117 points while Lenoir-Rhyne totaled 71 points for third place. Queens' men totaled 182 points to best the Bulldogs who finished with 150 points. Carson-Newman wrapped the top three with 130.5 points.
The women earned five first-place finishes on day two to help secure their win while also recording three national marks. On the track,
Melanie Welsing (13.79) and
Elise Ulseth (13.95) finished first and second in the 100-meter hurdles, both recording national marks.
Additionally,
Fatima Alanis took first in the 5,000-meter run clocking a time of 17:42.45 and leading a pack of Queens runners across the finish line.
Anna Janke,
Stevie Lawrence-Wrist,
Gillian Kasitz, and
Madison Webster finished in spots 3-6 to score points for Queens as well.
Gabby Schultz took first place in both the shot put (13.71m) and discus throw (44.42m) finishing ahead of
To'Mara Carmichael in both events. Carmichael placed second in the shot put and third in the discus.
In jumps, Ulseth took first place in the long jump with a DII provisional mark of 6.05-meters. Ulseth also finished third in the high jump and triple jump. Her mark in the high jump was also a national mark as she finished behind
Lucy Walliker of Queens who took second place with a national mark of 1.73-meters.
Queens' men collected four event championships on the day to aid in them capturing their sixth consecutive SAC Championship win.
Seb Anthony led the way on day two winning both the 800 and 1,5000-meter runs. He clocked a time of 1:56.11 in the 800 and a time of 3:53.35 in the 1,500.
Adam Wright also ran in both races finishing fourth in each.
Also collecting his second win of the meet was
Jan Lukas Becker who took first place in the 5,000-meter run today in 14:26.15. Becker recorded the DII provisional time after just winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday.
Thrower
Martin Knauer was also able to take the top step of the podium today after winning the shot put with a DII provisional toss of 18.21-meters. Knauer also finished second in the discus throw.
Today's events began with the completion of the heptathlon and the decathlon. Queens'
Cerys Lee took third in the heptathlon with 3,900 points while
Tommy Bobbitt (4,342 points) and
Harris Helberg (3,688) finished the decathlon in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Following the meet, Queens'
Jim Vahrenkamp was named SAC Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year.
Fatima Alanis was named Freshman of the Year while
Elise Ulseth and
Martin Knauer both earned Field Athlete of the Year honors.
The Royals are scheduled to compete at Grand Valley State, April 30-May1.
